CASHMERE
Cashmere is valued for its exceptional softness, natural warmth and breathability. Derived from the fine undercoat of cashmere goats, the fiber is significantly finer than traditional sheep’s wool, creating a lightweight knit that insulates while remaining breathable.
At Mayla Sangha, cashmere is used as a refined outer layer for movement and everyday ritual. The garments are designed to provide warmth before and after practice while remaining elegant and comfortable in daily life.
Our cashmere pieces are developed using carefully selected yarns from long-established spinning mills that specialize in premium natural fibers.
The Fiber
Cashmere fibers originate from the soft undercoat of goats that live in cold climates. To protect themselves during winter, the animals develop an extremely fine insulating layer beneath their outer hair. When harvested and processed, this undercoat produces one of the world’s most prized natural fibers. Premium cashmere is defined by two key characteristics:
fiber length and fiber diameter.
High-quality fibers typically measure 15.5–15.8 microns in diameter and 36–38 mm in length. These specifications create yarns that are exceptionally soft yet durable enough to maintain their structure over time. Because of its natural hollow structure, cashmere traps warmth while remaining breathable, making it ideal for garments designed to regulate body temperature.
Undyed Cashmere
Some Mayla Sangha pieces use undyed cashmere, allowing the fiber’s natural beauty to remain intact. Undyed yarn avoids the chemical dyeing process entirely. By preserving the original color of the fiber, the yarn retains its natural softness and requires significantly fewer resources during production. Producing non-dyed cashmere can save substantial amounts of energy and water compared to traditional dyeing processes, while also maintaining the purity of the fiber.
Natural cashmere shades range from soft ivory and warm beige to deeper camel and brown tones, depending on the natural coat color of the goats. The result is a material that feels authentic, tactile and quietly luxurious.
Origin & Responsible Sourcing
The yarns used for Mayla Sangha garments are sourced from established spinning mills including M.oro Cashmere and Consinee Group, both recognized globally for their expertise in premium natural fibers. These suppliers operate large-scale spinning facilities and work closely with herders across regions where cashmere goats have traditionally been raised for generations.
Responsible sourcing is supported through certifications and monitoring systems that promote transparency across the supply chain. Among the standards associated with these mills are programs such as:
• The Good Cashmere Standard • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 • Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) • Global Recycled Standard (GRS) • Higg Index participation
These initiatives support improved environmental practices, traceability of raw materials and responsible animal welfare standards.
Craft & Yarn Development
Cashmere yarn development requires precise spinning techniques to preserve the integrity of the fiber. The mills that produce the yarns used in Mayla Sangha garments employ advanced spinning technologies that optimize efficiency while maintaining strict quality control.
This includes automated production processes designed to:
• minimize waste • improve fiber consistency • ensure traceability throughout manufacturing
Yarns are carefully spun to achieve the desired balance between softness, durability and structure before being knitted into garments. The resulting knitwear combines the softness associated with luxury cashmere with the strength required for everyday wear.
Caring for Cashmere
With proper care, cashmere garments can last for many years.
Because the fiber is naturally resilient, maintenance is simple when done correctly.
Washing
Cashmere can be gently hand washed using cool water and a mild wool detergent. Avoid excessive agitation and rinse thoroughly.
Drying
After washing, press the garment gently with a towel to remove excess water and lay it flat to dry. Do not hang wet cashmere, as this can stretch the fibers.
Storage
Cashmere should be folded rather than hung to maintain its shape. During long periods of storage, breathable garment bags or cotton storage boxes help protect the fibers. Over time, small pills may appear on the surface of the knit. These can easily be removed using a cashmere comb. With thoughtful care, the fiber softens further with wear and develops the character that makes natural materials so valued.
Cashmere at Mayla Sangha
Cashmere at Mayla Sangha is chosen not only for its softness but for its ability to support the body’s natural rhythm. The fiber provides warmth without weight, making it ideal as a layer worn before and after practice. At the same time, its refined texture allows the garments to move effortlessly between the studio and everyday life. Rather than seasonal trends, the focus is on materials that age beautifully, pieces designed to be worn often and kept for years.
